Tax-efficient investing in France: what should you compare?
A tax saving can be useful. On its own, it does not tell you whether an investment suits you. Before signing, compare what you commit, what you could actually recover and the conditions that apply throughout the investment.

Tax deduction, reduction or credit: what is the difference?
Under French rules, a deduction reduces taxable income; a tax reduction lowers tax due; a tax credit may also lead to a refund. The results differ. Confirm the limits, conditions and any carry-forward rules of the specific scheme.
Ask for an estimate based on your circumstances, not just an advertised percentage. Mention any expected income change or move abroad before comparing options.

- My income and foreseeable changes in circumstances
Compare the investment with and without the tax benefit
For each proposal, ask for two assessments: how the investment works financially and its expected tax effect. Compare entry, management and exit fees, loss risk and taxation on exit. An initial tax saving does not cancel a later cost or loss.
Ask a practical question: would this investment still have a place in your wealth plan if the benefit were smaller than expected? The answer helps distinguish a coherent plan from a decision made solely to reduce this year's tax.
- The proposal's fees and risks
- The expected outcome without the tax benefit
Check when you can actually get your money back
A tax benefit's required holding period and the ability to sell are separate issues. France's AMF highlights the limited liquidity of private equity funds and the risk of loss. A tax-related date is not a promise of repayment.
Keep money needed for near-term spending and projects separate. Ask what happens if you need to exit early or no longer meet a condition of the scheme.
- My cash needs during the investment
- Exit terms and circumstances that could invalidate the benefit
